Clifton is a beautiful place to while away a day or two. But while it's most famous for its museums, bars, restaurants and general bustle, visitors to this beautiful neighbourhood will often find themselves stumbling across a quaint little alleyway or lane. There's no better way to spend a lazy sunny day than meandering through the secret lanes of leafy Clifton - so we've gathered together some of our favourites for you.

The Polygon

Possibly the most beautiful terrace in Clifton. Snuggled away deep within the fringes of Hotwells and Clifton, this bright and elegant terrace is surrounded by private, well-kept gardens. It’s reached by a series of lanes lined by rustic brick walls, making it very easy to forget you’re in the middle of a city and not a rural idyll. (above)

Ambra Vale East

Although it’s technically not a lane, this quaint little street in Cliftonwood has a small but beautifully-maintained community garden. Perfect for a stop to soak in your surroundings when exploring the Cliftonwood area. (above left)

Goldney Lane

This long lane winds down through Cliftonwood to Ambra Vale from just beside the University of Bristol’s Goldney Hall. It offers some fantastic views over the city and harbourside and is definitely worth a wander - especially as it pops out near The Lion, one of Cliftonwood's best pubs. (above middle)

Birdcage Walk

Less 'secret' than many of the other walks in this piece, Birdcage Walk runs through the cemetery of the ruined medieval St Andrews Church. Beautiful in any season, it's particularly atmospheric on a crisp autumn evening. It's also been immortalised in print as the title of Helen Dunmore's excellent novel about the effects of the French Revolution on English high society. (above right)

The ZigZag

This twisting piece of tarmac winds its way down from Sion Hill all the way to the Portway. It gives some unique close-ups of the Suspension Bridge from below and a chance to enjoy the views as you drop through the Gorge. It’s quite a steep path – definitely easier going down rather than up! (above)

Hanover Lane

A tiny little cut through, this little slice of Clifton is a charming back alleyway filled with doorways and greenery. It's more of a shortcut between Gordon Road and Richmond Terrace, but take it and you'll feel like a local with the know-how of all Clifton's little secrets.
